A new year! I hope yours will be wonderful and healthy.
2025 will be an important year for GSD Bio's work to democratize vaccine production.
We're moving important SEED system-produced vaccine prototypes into pre-clinical testing to study how much they can prime the immune system fight disease.
In parallel, we're collaborating to continuously improve the SEED platform to facilitate new prototype-making and broaden access to epidemic prevention.
The Super Phage Force is coming together! We continue to connect with wonderful people like you who are excited about creating new paths to a healthier future and who are adding their strengths and effort. Thank you for your support and please keep sharing the power of biology for good!
Warmly,
Jonathan
This season of giving, help spread the word about citizen-driven biology for good!
I'm giving my effort to develop and test the SEED system to democratize vaccine production and prevent epidemics.
We need your help to grow our active network, to empower everyone to make healthy systems change.
Please check out this one-page GSD Bio call to action (below) and share it with others who care about contributing (in whatever way they can and will) to a more equitable and resilient system.
Post it (media platform, local restaurant, campus bulletin board), email it, project it, put it on a digital billboard! Let's all work together for a healthy future.
Warmly,
Jonathan
The story of GSD Bio (so far) was published in Phage Directory's Capsid & Tail. Infectious generosity with phages!

We’re excited to share details about the Simple Epidemic-Ending Defense (SEED) system and how it can help prevent epidemics!
The figure illustrates an example of combining a food-safe and unmodified bacterium with an antigen-encoding bacteriophage.
(A) The components are stable for storage and transport. They can be combined in a food-safe matrix prior to administration and/or can be further combined in situ for desired protein antigen production.
(B) The bacteriophage specifically infects the L. lactis cells and repurposes the bacterial machinery for production of phage components and programmed antigen.
(C ) The bacterial cells lyse and release new phage particles, the desired antigen, antigens displayed on the phage, and naturally-occurring adjuvants contributed by the L. lactis cells.
Advantages of the SEED system for global scale access to prevent epidemics and untreatable infections:
We are using our process to produce vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 and the currently spreading highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1). The platform can be used to build a large catalog of stable subunit vaccine prototypes. These prototypes can be rapidly added to and modified to address emerging threats and to incorporate beneficial development.
Some key characteristics of the SEED system include: The components are grown rather than synthesized, no antibiotics are required, and no specialized skills or equipment are needed for production or administration.
The point-of-need produced vaccines can be easily administered to vulnerable animals in feed or water to promote a protective mucosal immune response. The low cost, speed, and simplicity of vaccine production and administration provide a needed One Health tool to protect animals (including humans) and lower the risk of spillover to humans.
About GSD Bio:
Greater San Diego Biological Solutions is a San Diego, CA not-for-profit organization, founded and incorporated in November of 2022. Jonathan Moore, PhD (President/Chairperson) and Joe Warner, PhD (Director of Research and Development) are molecular microbiologists who developed industrial enzymes and microbial cell factories at Genomatica, Diversa, and others.
We're committed to preventing epidemics by enabling low-cost immunizations that can be quickly scaled and produced at point-of-need. We’re developing the SEED system for simplified protein production that uses food-safe ingredients and a bacterium used globally in food production.
The SEED system (Lactococcal phage-vectored protein production at point-of-need) is patent-pending.
